NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCE
With Il Pirata, Vincenzo Bellini made his début at La Scala in 1827, setting the scene for a long collaboration with librettist Felice Romani. Dating to 1958, the last staging of Il Pirataat La Scala featured Maria Callas as protagonist. Today, the forbidding part of Imogene is sung by Sonya Yoncheva, no doubt the most acclaimed soprano for this repertoire, under the baton of Riccardo Frizza. The stage direction is estrusted to Emilio Sagi, internationally known for his stagings of Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti and for his capacity to actualize the Belcanto repertoire.
